Annually, on the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, it's traditional to bless candles during Mass. The day is approximately midway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox and so it celebrates the coming of the true Light. It looks back to the Christmas Infancy narratives of Jesus and forward to His death and Resurrection in the words of Simeon to Mary. And it has a secular counterpart in the observances of Ground Hog Day, when mankind looks with hope for an end to winter and the coming of spring.
